Leyla Sefiddashti- MSc PT, PhD (Candidate)

Leyla Sefiddashti is a resident physiotherapist and PhD Candidate in Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Ottawa. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy before completing a Master of Science in Physiotherapy, where she developed advanced knowledge in musculoskeletal rehabilitation, sports physiotherapy, and human movement sciences. She is currently pursuing her doctoral research, which focuses on playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs) in music students, with the goal of improving injury prevention, early identification, and rehabilitation strategies for performing artists.

Throughout her clinical career, Leyla has developed extensive experience in the assessment and management of sports injuries, musculoskeletal conditions, and movement-related disorders. She has more than seven years of experience working with professional and competitive athletes, helping them recover from injury, optimize performance, and safely return to sport. Her experience includes serving as the physiotherapist for elite athletic teams, including the Women’s National Wushu Team during the 8th Wushu Sanda World Cup, where she provided on-site injury assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-competition support.

Leyla’s clinical approach combines comprehensive assessment, evidence-based rehabilitation, manual therapy, individualized exercise prescription, and patient education to help individuals restore function, improve movement quality, and reduce the risk of future injury. She has completed advanced training in Dry Needling, Corrective Exercise, and Functional Movement Screening, allowing her to integrate movement analysis and targeted rehabilitation into her treatment plans. She is passionate about helping patients of all activity levels—from recreational individuals to elite athletes—achieve their functional and performance goals.

Alongside her clinical practice, Leyla has a strong interest in rehabilitation research and injury prevention. Her doctoral work explores the biomechanical, physical, and occupational factors contributing to musculoskeletal disorders among musicians, with the aim of developing evidence-based strategies that improve long-term health and performance. She remains committed to translating research findings into practical clinical applications that enhance rehabilitation outcomes and support evidence-informed physiotherapy practice.

As a member of the RehabOttawa.ca team, Leyla contributes to the development and scientific review of evidence-based rehabilitation protocols, with particular interests in sports rehabilitation, movement analysis, injury prevention, postoperative recovery, and exercise-based rehabilitation. Working alongside a multidisciplinary team of physiotherapists, researchers, and healthcare professionals, she is committed to ensuring that the project’s clinical recommendations reflect current scientific evidence and best practices.
