MSc PT, PhD (Candidate)
Physiotherapist – Rehabilitation Researcher

Sima Vatandoost is an internationally trained physiotherapist and PhD Candidate in Rehabilitation Sciences with more than a decade of experience in clinical practice and research. Since beginning her professional career in 2011, she has been dedicated to helping individuals manage pain, restore mobility and function, and regain independence through evidence-based rehabilitation. Her clinical philosophy is centered on patient-centred care, emphasizing comprehensive assessment, individualized treatment planning, and meaningful functional outcomes tailored to each patient’s unique goals.
Sima earned her Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy before completing a Master of Science in Physiotherapy, where her research focused on identifying and understanding specific subgroups of individuals with low back pain. Her growing interest in spinal disorders and musculoskeletal rehabilitation has led her to pursue doctoral studies in Rehabilitation Sciences, where her current research investigates low back pain in individuals undergoing total hip arthroplasty. Her work aims to better understand the interaction between spinal symptoms and lower extremity joint pathology to improve rehabilitation strategies and patient outcomes.
Throughout her clinical and academic career, Sima has developed extensive experience in the assessment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal conditions, with a particular interest in low back pain and orthopedic rehabilitation. She is passionate about integrating current scientific evidence with individualized rehabilitation strategies to help patients improve movement, reduce pain, and safely return to their daily activities. Her research continues to strengthen her understanding of clinical decision-making and supports her commitment to advancing evidence-based physiotherapy practice.
Alongside her research, Sima is dedicated to knowledge translation and improving the quality of rehabilitation care through evidence-informed practice. She believes that combining clinical expertise with high-quality research is essential for developing more effective assessment and treatment approaches that address the complex needs of individuals living with musculoskeletal conditions. Her long-term goal is to contribute to the advancement of rehabilitation science while supporting clinicians in delivering personalized, high-value patient care.
As a member of the RehabOttawa.ca team, Sima contributes to the development and scientific review of evidence-based rehabilitation protocols, with particular interests in low back pain, orthopedic rehabilitation, postoperative recovery, and clinical research. Working alongside a multidisciplinary team of physiotherapists, researchers, and healthcare professionals, she is committed to ensuring that the project’s clinical recommendations reflect current scientific evidence and best practices. RehabOttawa.ca represents the first stage of a larger initiative currently under development. Together with a team of healthcare professionals, researchers, and technology experts, Sima is helping build an evidence-based rehabilitation ecosystem designed to better support patients throughout their postoperative recovery journey. The long-term vision is to bridge the gap between surgery and rehabilitation by providing personalized guidance, education, and ongoing support that empowers patients to achieve the best possible recovery. Further updates on the project’s future stages will be shared soon.
